FAQ

  • What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient philosophy/way of being in the world that when practiced regularly can help bring balance into your body and mind. In the West we often think of yoga as the twisty movements we see on Instagram which is known as asana in yoga. The physical movements are a good place to start, but there's a lot more to discover about yoga. Yoga is beyond touching your toes, it includes self-inquiry, truthfulness, meditation, pranayama, do no harm, discipline, and so so much more. With consistent practice you will notice many physical and mental benefits, you will feel more calm and present, your body will get stronger and more flexible, you will be more connected to your body, breath, and life. Basically, it’s magic.

  • Which classes are best for beginners?

If you're brand new to yoga asana or getting back at it we suggest starting with one of our gentle classes - our Soft Stretch Candlelight class, Restorative, Yin, or Flow and Stretch. Although we believe our classes are open to all levels of experience, it's best to ease into a practice. Basically, you can take any class, just know that you might not be able to do all the movements (yet) and must listen to your body and do what's right for you (always). Yoga teachers are guides and here to support you, but ultimately they're giving suggestions, you choose what's right for you in any class you attend. For more information on classes, check out our class page for descriptions and weekly times.

  • Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?

Nope! We hear this all the time, and it's just not true. It’s like saying "I gotta get cleaned up before taking my shower." Sure, you can enjoy the shower for shower sake, but it was created to help you get clean. You get the analogy : ) Yoga is called a practice for this specific reason, it's meant to be something you never perfect but instead you're always learning and growing and showing up each time open to who you are at that moment. Any kind of body at any age or level of fitness can practice yoga. Essentially, yoga is about paying attention and breathing, listening to your body, and honoring what is there. No flexibility required, all are welcome!

  • What does "Healing Space" mean?

We chose the name Open Eye Yoga and Healing Space to reflect how our studio is more than a place to move your body, it's a place to heal. Life is the peaks and the valleys and everything in between, the journey is to connect deeply with our truest selves and learn to ride the waves. Yoga is one practice that is beneficial to learning to flow with life, but it's not the only one. And we know healing doesn't happen in isolation, so we hope Open Eye can be a safe place for people to unravel the past and move into a present awareness of their innate wholeness. There's nothing wrong with you, you're not broken, though it does take finding stillness and connection to yourself to hear. We currently offer additional healing opportunities through our monthly Recovery Circle, Yoga Talks, Deep Meditation, Men's group, and Workshops.

  • What do I need to bring with me?

Just yourself and your openness is all you really need. We have all the mats, blocks, blankets, and an assortment of props you could ever want. But you're welcome to bring your own if you prefer, too. And no need for any speciality yoga clothes, choose what make you feel comfortable and allow you to breathe and move with ease. Shoes are not permitted in the studio and should be left in a cubby along with your silenced cell phone. Yoga starts right on time so we recommend arriving 15 minutes early so you have plenty of time to set up your mat, grab what you need, and get settled. So that's all you really need to bring .. and maybe occasionally a loved one because what's better than experiencing a good thing is sharing the good thing : )
